Post at a Glance: Summer break is here! Discover practical faith-based tips for nurse moms to stay balanced, reduce stress, protect their peace, and enjoy quality family time this summer.
Welcome Back, Sis!
Summer is officially here!
And if you’re anything like me, the end of the school year is always bittersweet.
Part of me is excited because we survived another school year.
The other part of me is wondering who approved this level of responsibility because now I have to pack legitimate lunches every day.
Every.
Single.
Day.
The stress is real.
Gone are the days of dropping the kids off at school and letting someone else handle lunch time, and keeping them entertained for a few hours.
Lord help us.
As nurse moms, summer can feel like a second job. We’re already balancing work schedules, motherhood, house responsibilities, and trying to take care of ourselves somewhere in the middle of all of it.
That’s why this summer, I want us to focus on something simple:
Balance.
Not perfection.
Not having a Pinterest-worthy summer.
Not spending thousands of dollars on activities.
Just creating a summer that protects our peace and allows us to enjoy the season God has given us.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)
So let’s talk about a few practical ways to stay sane this summer.
1. Schedules Still Exist, Sis!
Summer break is not a free-for-all.
I know the temptation is to throw all structure out the window, but hear me out.
Kids thrive on routines.
And honestly?
So do we.
Now, am I saying schedule every minute of every day?
Absolutely not.
But having a general rhythm for the day can save everyone’s sanity.
Maybe breakfast happens around the same time.
Maybe quiet reading time happens after lunch.
Maybe screens don’t come on until chores are finished.
Whatever works for your family, stick with it.
A little structure creates a lot of peace.
2. Start Preparing for Back-to-School Now
Listen.
August has a funny way of showing up unannounced.
One minute it’s June.
The next minute you’re standing in a crowded store buying folders, glue sticks, and wondering why school supplies cost as much as a car payment.
This is your gentle reminder to start now.
Every pay period:
- Purchase a few school supplies.
- Grab uniforms when they’re on sale.
- Put aside a small amount of money for shopping later.
Future You will be so grateful.
Trust me.
3. Schedule Personal Time
Sis.
I’m talking directly to you right now.
Not your children.
Not your spouse.
Not your patients.
You.
Put something on your calendar that is just for you.
I don’t care if it’s:
- A massage
- A coffee date with yourself
- A half-day off work
- A pedicure
- Sitting in your car in complete silence
Schedule it.
Protect it.
Look forward to it.
We spend so much time caring for everyone else that we often forget we’re a person too.
You deserve rest.
You deserve joy.
You deserve a break.
Even Jesus stepped away to rest.
If our Savior needed time alone, I think we can stop feeling guilty about it too.
4. Use Your Free Resources
One thing about this economy?
We’re going to maximize every free opportunity available.
My favorite summer resource?
The library.
I absolutely love the library.
Many libraries offer summer reading programs where kids can earn prizes for reading books throughout the summer.
Free books.
Free activities.
Free air conditioning.
That’s a win-win-win.
Also check your church’s youth ministry.
Many churches host:
- Vacation Bible School
- Summer camps
- Family nights
- Youth activities
- Community events
Not only are they often free or low-cost, but they’re also opportunities for our children to grow spiritually and build friendships.
5. Schedule Screen-Free Time
This one might step on a few toes.
Including mine.
The reels are reeling.
The group chats are active.
And before we know it, we’ve spent an hour scrolling.
Meanwhile, our babies are growing up right in front of us.
Summer goes by fast.
One day they’re asking you to play outside.
The next day they’re asking for the car keys.
Be intentional.
Put the phone down.
Turn off the TV.
Close the laptop.
Go for a walk.
Play a board game.
Have a water balloon fight.
Sit outside and watch the sunset.
Create memories.
The dishes will still be there.
The emails will still be there.
But this version of your child won’t.
A Little Encouragement Before You Go
Sis, summer doesn’t have to be perfect.
Your children don’t need expensive vacations.
They don’t need every day planned down to the minute.
What they’ll remember most is how you made them feel.
The laughs.
The conversations.
The memories.
The moments.
So this summer, let’s give ourselves permission to slow down.
To protect our peace.
To enjoy our families.
And to trust God with the rest.
Summer Affirmation for the Nurse Mom ☀️
Repeat after me:
- I do not have to do everything to have a successful summer.
- My family does not need perfection; they need my presence.
- God will give me the strength I need for this season.
- Rest is productive.
- Joy is allowed in my life.
- I choose peace over pressure.
- I will enjoy the blessings God has placed right in front of me.
Prayer for this Week!
Lord,
Thank You for bringing us into another summer season.
Help us slow down enough to enjoy the blessings You’ve placed in front of us. Give us wisdom as we balance motherhood, nursing, family, and our personal well-being.
Help us create meaningful memories, protect our peace, and remember that our value is not found in how much we accomplish.
Fill our homes with joy, laughter, and Your presence this summer.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
