Why We Chose This Call: A Love Letter to Nursing

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

Post at a Glance!

With everything going on in the world — the burnout, the staffing drama, the violence, the politics, the chaos — it’s easy to question why.
Why did I choose this career?
Why am I still here?

Then I remember: nursing isn’t a job. It’s a calling.

The 2 Types of People

There are two types of people in the world — those who heal and those who hurt. Sis, we were called to heal. Not just with the stethoscope and chart, but with heart and presence. Some days we pull patients back from the brink. Other days, we hold their hand as they take their last breath so they don’t transition alone. We speak life into families who are terrified. We translate medical madness into something their spirits can hold onto. We advocate even when our own voices shake. We are the heartbeat of healthcare.

I’ve met nurses who said, “Don’t do it! Run while you can!” and there are days I’ve wanted to agree. But then there are the moments — the moments where God reminds me exactly why He placed me here. The smile after a hard diagnosis. The hug from a wife who finally feels seen. The patient who whispers, “Thank you, I was scared.” Those holy moments keep me going.

So how do we stay rooted when times get tough?
Prayer. Mindfulness. Purpose.

Prayer keeps us centered in God’s divine plan.
Mindfulness keeps us from just “clocking in” and instead connecting.
Purpose reminds us that even on the hardest days — WE were handpicked for this assignment.

Nursing is powerful. We don’t just work at the bedside. We change policies and laws, we teach, we research, we sit in the C-Suite, we create community health programs, we run for office — yet no matter how high we climb, it all starts with one truth we never forget:

“I’m a Nurse.”

To the new nurse questioning if you made the right choice — sis, you absolutely did.
To the seasoned nurse feeling worn and weary — your labor is not in vain.
To the future nurse reading this with dreams in your heart — welcome to a calling that will change your life forever.

Whenever you doubt your WHY… come back to this post.

You were born to heal.
You were chosen for such a time as this.
You made the right choice.

With Love,

Sanjé
