Red Flags Aren’t Accessories: Discernment & Direction for New Nursing Moms

Nursing mama? Learn how to spot red flags early in clinical rotations, stay rooted in faith, and discern God’s best path for your nursing journey.

Happy Monday, Sis!!
Let’s gather ’round this blog post like it’s the group chat you didn’t know you needed. You already know—I’m Sanje, your Big Sis in Christ and creator of Rooted & Resilient. I’ve been in these scrubs since 2016 and I’ve seen a lot. Corrections, med/surg, outpatient palliative—you name it. But let’s get into this moment right here. You’re a mom and you’re starting your nursing career. First of all, hats off. You are doing something brave, something hard, and something holy.

Now let’s talk about discernment. Let’s talk about knowing when something ain’t right and having the courage to walk away—whether it’s in school, your first job, a friendship, or even a version of yourself that no longer fits.

When the Flag is Red—Don’t Wait for It to Fade

You know that feeling. The Holy Spirit nudges you. That uneasy tension in your chest? That’s not just anxiety, that’s your discernment speaking. Sis, don’t gaslight yourself. If something feels off—it probably is.

“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” – Proverbs 27:12 (NIV)

We don’t ignore red flags around here. We don’t bleach them into pink. We don’t justify toxicity in the name of “just starting out.” Whether it’s a clinical site that dismisses you, an instructor who shames more than teaches, or a job offer that feels more like a trap than an opportunity—you are allowed to walk away.

Let’s Talk Nursing Clinical Rotations

Starting clinical rotations? Love that for you. But clinicals aren’t just about checking off competencies—they’re opportunities for you to discern the kind of nurse you want to be.

  • Treat every clinical like a soft interview: Watch how the staff interacts. Do they support each other? Are the nurses burned out and bitter? How do they treat the CNAs?
  • Ask questions : Not just about procedures, but about culture. “How does this unit handle emergencies? What does onboarding look like? Are new grads supported?”
  • Use your eyes, not just your ears: Is the unit chaotic? Are there moments of teamwork, or does everyone look like they’re barely surviving?

And when you spot a red flag—write it down, pray on it, ask God for clarity. He will show you.

Don’t Be Fooled By The Aesthetic

Social media has made the nursing world look like a highlighter-colored badge reel with a cute coffee cup and designer scrubs. And while that might be part of it—real nursing is deeper. It’s heavy. It’s holy. And sometimes, it’s heartbreak.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2 (NIV)

That “perfect job” someone posted on Instagram? It might be a smoke screen. Sis, seek God—not clout. He will direct your path.

What to Do When You See a Red Flag

  1. Pause, don’t panic: Pray. Write it down. Seek clarity.
  2. Talk to your trusted people: Not everyone—just the ones who know you and know God.
  3. Don’t stay somewhere God didn’t send you: Favor is found where His presence is.

And remember, leaving doesn’t mean you failed. Leaving means you trusted God enough to walk away from what’s not for you.

Final Thoughts for Today

Baby nurse or future nurse, you’ve got purpose wrapped in scrubs and anointing in every step. There will be moments where you question everything—your ability, your decisions, your faith. But never question this: God didn’t bring you this far to leave you confused.

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” – Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)

I’m proud of you. I’m praying for you. And I’m rooting for you!

Let’s keep walking—rooted in faith, resilient through it all!
