How to Start Networking as a Nurse Mom: Real-World Tips with Faith & Strategy

Just starting your career as a registered nurse and feeling lost on where to begin with networking? This post breaks it down for nurse moms juggling life, career, and faith—with practical tips, scripture, and encouragement to grow strong roots in your profession.

Before we dive into this week’s nurse career talk, can I just say… this weekend has been SO giving, honey! And it all started with a simple little idea: a word cloud.

Let Me Tell You Real Quick…

So here’s the backstory: I’ve been reading, journaling, praying, reflecting—you know, doing the inner work—and I realized that words of affirmation are my love language. Like… it hits different when someone says something kind and means it, right?

But here’s the thing. I also realized that if we don’t speak up and let people know what we need (even our family and friends), we end up sitting in quiet frustration. Sis—no one is a mind reader… except God.

“You do not have because you do not ask God.” — James 4:2 (NIV)

So late last week, I texted a few of my closest people and asked them to send me 3–5 words that describe me. When I tell you, I was in tears. Their responses were beautiful. Then I plugged them into freewordcloudgenerator.com and created this vibrant, affirming word cloud. (Scroll up to see the screenshot—it’s at the top of this post!)

Now I keep it as my screensaver. It’s a daily reminder of who I am, how I’m seen, and how deeply I’m loved. It’s not just cute—it’s healing. I highly recommend you do the same, or make one for someone you love. It’s a meaningful gift that’ll last far longer than flowers.

Now Let’s Get Into This Week’s Word: Networking as a Nurse Mom

Whether you just wrapped up your first 12-hour shift or you’re still trying to figure out how to spike a saline bag in nursing school—one thing is for sure: you’ve got to be thinking about your next move.

Networking is the key to unlocking opportunity in this career. But don’t worry sis, you don’t have to be “everywhere all at once.” Let’s talk strategy—start small and scale up.

Step 1: Join a Committee at Work!

Start right where you are! Ask your manager or preceptor what committees are available at your hospital. Look out for ones like:

  • Falls Committee
  • Medication Safety
  • CAUTI/CLABSI/SEPSIS
  • Policy
  • Practice Council or Staff Nurse Advisory Council

Why does this matter? Because you’ll be:

  • Building relationships across departments
  • Getting “face” time with Leadership
  • Representing your unit in ways that matter
  • Gaining confidence by contributing

Step 2: Join a Professional Nursing Organization

If you’re a nurse or even a nursing student—you need to be part of a nursing organization. Period.

  • Start with your state’s nursing association
  • Explore national ones like ANA, AORN, ONS, etc.
  • Pick one related to your specialty—or the specialty you hope to be in!

Bonus tip: Many hospitals reimburse at least one membership per year. Just ask your manager and save that receipt!

You’ll get access to:

  • Conferences & CEUs
  • Scholarships
  • Mentorship opportunities
  • Sisterhood that spans across states!

Step 3: Clean Up Your LinkedIn

I know, I know—LinkedIn doesn’t give TikTok energy. But trust me, it’s a power move professionally. If you’re not there yet, it’s time to get on it.

  • Upload a professional photo
  • Share your clinical interests or nursing goals
  • Connect with other nurses in your hospital, state, or specialty

And please—be mindful about what you post. Keep it faith-forward, educational, and encouraging. You never know who’s watching (or hiring!)

Faith Forward Focus

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

We serve a God who orders our steps, even when the path feels uncertain. Networking isn’t just a professional task—it’s a divine opportunity. Each connection is a seed planted, and in due time, it will bear fruit.

Sis, Your Name Is Already in Rooms You Haven’t Walked Into Yet

You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just be open. Be intentional. Be prayerful. And keep showing up for yourself and for your future.

Remember—I made the mistakes so you don’t have to! You’ve got me, this community, and a God who is FOR you. So go ahead and try just one thing this week—whether it’s a committee, a membership, or starting that LinkedIn profile.

Prayer for the Week!

Lord, I thank You for the nurse reading this today. You’ve placed her in this calling for a reason. I pray You give her confidence to connect, wisdom to choose the right steps, and divine favor as she builds her nursing career. May every conversation be ordained, every door aligned with Your purpose, and every challenge be met with strength and support. In Jesus’ name, amen.
