Happy Wednesday Sis!
Let’s talk about something real—how I stay creative as a nurse. I’ve been in this game for over eight years now (a whole decade in healthcare if we’re counting my nursing assistant days!), and let me tell you… if you don’t find balance, this job will drain you!
For years, my life was just work, sleep, repeat. I’d grind through three 12-hour shifts, knock out for an entire day, and before I knew it—BOOM, back to work. That was NOT living. I didn’t go through nursing school, surviving all those sleepless nights and exams, just to feel stuck in a cycle of exhaustion and resentment. Oh noooo, not me!
But then… I became a mom. And suddenly, being intentional with my time wasn’t a luxury—it was a necessity. I wanted to be present for all my baby’s milestones, so I started making small but powerful changes:
How I Created Balance in My Nursing Life
💡 I spaced out my work schedule – Working three 12-hour shifts back-to-back was not ideal for me or my child. So, I adjusted my schedule, giving myself breathing room between shifts.
💡 I switched from night shift to mid-shift, and now days – Listen, night shift had me feeling like a zombie. Moving to days changed my entire rhythm. Sunshine? A game changer.
💡 I prioritized outdoor activities – Nature is free therapy! Standing in the sun for even 10 minutes instantly improves my mood. Taking my little one outside? Instant joy.
💡 Meal prepping = Self-love letters to myself – When you automate parts of your life, you free up time for what really matters. Prepping meals 2-3 times a week meant less stress and more peace.
💡 Cleaning as I go – Because the mess will pile up if I let it. And let’s be real, nobody has time for that!
☝🏾 Now, let me add this—I’m a single mom with very limited support. None of this balance would have been possible without GOD. 🙌🏾
How God Opened the Door to My Creativity
The craziest part? This is the most creative I have EVER been. Once God pulled me out of the scarcity mindset that I grew up in, things shifted. Healing my inner child allowed me to tap into joy, imagination, and fun again.
“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” — Ephesians 3:20
In my time off, I started making wreaths, candles, body butters, scrubs, bath bombs, blogs, and digital products. And of course, the entrepreneur in me was always ready to make a dollar 😂. But more than anything, I was enjoying the process. Creating became my escape, my therapy, my JOY.
And you know what? It made me a better mom. Instead of pouring from an empty cup, I was filling up on creativity, joy, and balance.
So Sis, if you’ve been feeling stuck, exhausted, or like you’re just going through the motions, ask yourself—when was the last time you did something just for YOU? Creativity isn’t just for artists; it’s for all of us.
Let’s make time for joy, creativity, and the life God called us to LIVE.
